Civil Engineering

Aerospace, Civil, Computer, Electrical and Mechanical Engineering are impacted for first-time freshmen. Applicants to these majors are held to higher admission standards based on available space, and CPP's Multifactor Admission model also gives impacted STEM majors additional consideration for mathematics coursework.

All applicants to the College of Engineering, including students who qualify for Top 10% automatic admission, are reviewed for placement into General Engineering.

All first-year College of Engineering students enter General Engineering. To become eligible for a restricted engineering major, students must complete ENGE 1215 and ENGE 1216 or ENGE 1414, MATH 1225, MATH 1226, and ENGL 1105, earn at least 12 Virginia Tech GPA hours, and have at least a 2.0 overall Virginia Tech GPA; a 3.0 GPA guarantees admission for engineering students who meet the requirements.

First-year applicants apply directly to their engineering major of interest. All Grainger College of Engineering majors require at least 3.5 years of high school math, including trigonometry or higher.

Incoming West Lafayette engineering students are admitted to First-Year Engineering rather than one of the engineering degree programs. To complete FYE and become eligible for Transition to Major, students must complete the required engineering, calculus, chemistry, physics, selective, and communication courses with C- or better, earn at least a 2.00 cumulative GPA and 2.00 Engineering Admissions Index, and then enter the T2M process; admission to capacity-constrained majors may be competitive.

First-year applicants need 16 high-school units, including 4 years of college-prep math through trigonometry and 2 lab sciences; chemistry and physics are preferred.

For Mechanical Engineering, first-year students entering Summer 2026 through Spring 2027 must be in the College of Engineering or Division of Undergraduate Studies, have 29-55 graded Penn State credits, earn C or better in CHEM 110, EDSGN 100, MATH 140, MATH 141 and PHYS 211, and have at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA before entering the major.

Freshman and transfer students selecting engineering enter engineering-pending status and must complete Calculus I, Calculus II, Physics for Engineers and Scientists I, and an approved chemistry course with C or better before declaring the specific engineering discipline.

Engineering pathways are not all identical. Aerospace Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Computer Science and Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering are limited-space programs available only to students in the corresponding pre-major and require a later admission-to-major application; other engineering majors may admit students without that application.

First-years apply to Engineering as their chosen major; all Cal Poly majors are impacted and applicants compete within the major. The admission threshold varies with major capacity and applicant pool.

In addition to FIU's general admission requirements, incoming students seeking Biomedical, Civil, Computer, Electrical, Environmental or Mechanical Engineering must place into MAC 2311 Calculus I or higher. For first-time-in-college students, a Math Placement Score of 45 or higher places into Calculus I; students who do not place into Calculus I enter STEP and may declare the engineering major after completing the required math progression.

Engineering students begin in a pre-major and must satisfy major impaction criteria before moving into the major. For most engineering majors, the listed calculus, physics, chemistry or programming courses must be completed with grades of C or better and a GPA of at least 2.7.

First-year applicants seeking admission to the Cockrell School must meet the Calculus Readiness Requirement by the December 1 admissions application deadline; Cockrell offers summer or fall admission only.

First-years enter Engineering First Year. To join a department through CODA, complete the six success courses with C or better and at least a 2.0 CODA GPA.

Admission to STEM majors is initially to pre-major status. For major declaration, engineering programs generally require at least a 2.5 cumulative GPA and grades of C or better in specified lower-division preparation; for Civil Engineering this includes MATH 122, MATH 123 and PHYS 151.

First-years apply to a chosen major on the UC application; UC Davis recommends an alternate in case the first-choice major is not admitted. Later changes into Engineering have college eligibility rules.

Select a SEAS major on the standard application. Admission to UB and SEAS majors is competitive and receives an additional review of math and science readiness.

Students begin in General Engineering before entering a specific engineering major. Progression requires the General Engineering core with C or better plus the GPA standard set by the destination major.

Engineering freshmen are ranked within their chosen major under SJSU impaction. In addition to the general freshman impaction factors, College of Engineering applicants receive 400 points times their mathematics coursework GPA.

Iowa State has a separate minimum standard for direct admission to the College of Engineering; applicants below the College's minimum admissions index are instead placed in the Pathway to Engineering program. Engineering applicants also must complete two years of a single world language in addition to Iowa State's general high school course requirements.

Freshmen enter Engineering with MSU admission plus either ACT 23/SAT 1130, ACT 20-22/SAT 1030-1120 and 3.0 core GPA, or any test score and a 3.5 core GPA.

First-year applicants seeking engineering must select Engineering Undeclared or an engineering major other than Computer Engineering or Sustainable Bioresource Systems Engineering as their first-choice major to be considered for Direct to College admission. Admitted students enter as Engineering Undeclared and request placement into a specific engineering major after the first-year experience.

All new Whitacre College admissions first complete a foundational curriculum consisting of English I, English II, Calculus I, Calculus II, two science courses and a first engineering course. Students then qualify for upper-division study using the GPA standard required by their department; students whose foundational-curriculum GPA does not qualify for their preferred major must choose an alternate major.

Missouri S&T admits freshmen through university-wide standards and states no separate first-year engineering admission threshold.

Students enter Pre-Engineering, then move into a major after its entry requirements. Most programs require a 2.0 Auburn GPA and C or better in specified calculus, science, engineering and computing courses.

For Mechanical Engineering and other higher-requirement Fulton majors: minimum 1210 SAT or 24 ACT, or 3.00 high school GPA, or top 25% class rank, plus no high school math or science competency deficiencies.

First-years apply to a specific engineering major or Engineering Undeclared and need four years of math through precalculus or math analysis; physics and chemistry are strongly recommended.

Prospective students apply to the College of Engineering through The University of Alabama Undergraduate Admissions application. There is no separate application for admission to the College of Engineering except for Musical Audio Engineering, which requires a School of Music audition.

When accepted to the College of Engineering, students are admitted directly to one of its bachelor of science programs; prospective first-year students who are still exploring engineering may instead apply to Engineering Undeclared.

Engineering is a Limited Enrollment Program. Students accepted directly as freshmen into the Clark School must complete MATH141, PHYS161, CHEM135 or an approved substitute, and ENES100 with grades of C- or better and maintain at least a 2.0 GPA for the 45-credit review.

Freshman engineering students follow University of Florida freshman admission. The college recommends high school preparation including intermediate and advanced algebra, plane geometry, trigonometry, chemistry, physics and calculus, but states no separate freshman engineering admission application or competitive program decision.

Engineering students enter the college first, then seek Professional Admission to a degree program after at least 43 applicable credits. Major-specific GPA and course standards apply.

Georgia Tech first-year applicants do not apply to a specific major or college. Intended major is considered in the university review, but there is no separate admission decision to this program.

The current undergraduate admission page states no engineering-specific first-year admission bar. Students enter through Manhattan undergraduate admission.

First-years need a Pigman pathway: 3.65 HS GPA, or 3.0 plus calculus, qualifying ACT/SAT math, or ALEKS 61; precalculus with 3.30 also qualifies.

Engineering freshmen need 3 lab sciences including physics and chemistry and 4 college-prep math units including precalculus; calculus is strongly recommended.

First-year students apply to Michigan State University generally and may declare an Engineering Preference major. College of Engineering admission occurs later through a secondary process requiring at least 28 MSU credits, MTH 132 and 133 with grades of at least 2.0, at least a 2.0 mathematics GPA, and specified chemistry, physics and, for some majors, computer science coursework.

Engineering applicants must have completed high-school physics, chemistry and precalculus in addition to Northeastern's general admission requirements.

Engineering is competitive for first-year admission. After the first-year core, students need C+ in progression courses and a 2.5 progression GPA for most departments; Mechanical requires 2.8.
